SUNDAYS 8:45AM – 9:45AM

April 11 & 18, 2021
Speaker:  Dr. Charlene Jin Lee
Topic: Lament and Hope: Reflections on Exclusion and Belonging
Join us for a conversation about the rich and complex history of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in the United States. Charlene will bring historical perspectives and personal narratives on her experiences of exclusion and belonging. Through practices of lament and hope, she invites the community of faith to participate in justice making: to be swift in our love, brave in our words, radical in our actions.

NOTE:  The class on April 11 & 18 will not be recorded and posted on our website. If you want to attend, plan to do so live on Sunday morning.

April 25, May 2, 9 & 16, 2021
Speaker: Dr. Daniel Smith-Christopher

Topic: THE MOST BORING BOOK IN THE OLD TESTAMENT: Only it isn’t…and here’s why…

It may not entirely convince you that it is NOT the “most boring book” on the Old Testament…and to be honest, the jury is out for me, too, on this question.  However, to my surprise, here are four issues that I think are really very interesting – all dealing precisely with ideas, images, and stories from Numbers.  Some controversial, but ALL are intriguing.  So, I invite my Brentwood family to come along and make some discoveries with me…from the “problem with Priests”, to the discovery in 1967 of an ancient inscription on the demolished wall of an old building in Jordan, to lots of grisly violence (Hollywood would love it), we will look at a ‘Number’ of reasons (you see how I did that, right?) why the book is worth reading!!

Topic: “Bread and Water for the Journey”
While the current state of affairs has left many of us reeling, the constraints of the pandemic have also given many of us time to ponder our common humanity, to rethink our understanding of what we need versus what we want, and to witness the revelation of God in new and unexpected ways. Using John 6:1-21 as our springboard, let’s take a fresh look together at the grace of God made manifest in meeting basic human needs.
