SCL UPCOMING SCHEDULE

SEPTEMBER 19 & 26, OCTOBER 3, 10 & 17, 2021
SPEAKER: DR. DANIEL SMITH-CHRISTOPHER
SERIES TITLE: “AND NOW THIS! New Thinking on Some Biblical Issues…”

In this series, Dr. Christopher will discuss five issues where more recent work is raising new and interesting questions about Biblical history and how we read and understand important books of the Old Testament. He will provide the background, what he USED to teach, and what he NOW thinks are new ideas that should be considered! In Session Five, we will even consider important discoveries of texts NOT in the Bible, but definitely discuss Ancient Hebrews! Get ready for some interesting surprises.

#1.  The Exile and Re-reading Genesis. Getting Started. This session will set the stage for all the sessions that follow, but will also illustrate the them of the course: How we are re-reading texts in new ways!
#2.  New Thoughts on the Prophet Ezekiel
#3.  New Thoughts on the Prophet Jeremiah
#4.  New Thoughts on the Book of Deuteronomy
#5.  New Thoughts on some Ancient texts OUTSIDE the Bible!

SUNDAYS, JULY 11 – AUGUST 1
Speaker:  REV. LORA EAST
Topic:  “Who is My Neighbor?”  A Class on the Interfaith Movement
Scripture says we should love our neighbors, but who is our neighbor?  And what about people who don’t identify as Christian? Join us (in person if you can!) to explore this biblical teaching, to learn more about the interfaith movement, to learn about Christianity’s approach to other religions, and to dive into our own theological approach to people outside the Christian faith.

Rev. Lora East is the Associate Pastor of Brentwood Presbyterian Church. She completed a Masters of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 2016 and a Masters in Interreligious Studies from the Graduate Theological Union and a Diploma in the Art of Spiritual Direction from SFTS in 2017. She was ordained and called to BPC in the summer of 2019.

Rev. Dr. Mike Harbert
PART 1 OF 2
Topic: Experiencing the Life we Long For
How do we experience the life we long for? How do we experience all Jesus promised
when he said: “My sheep know my voice and follow me” (John 10:3,5,27). In these two
weeks we will unpack how to experience a “conversational relationship” with Jesus that
opens us to finding the life we desire.

May 23, 2021 – PART 1 OF 2
Speaker:  Gary Sattler, ThD, PsyD

Topic: “TRAUMA”
Trauma is a word we hear frequently these days: the Rev. Dr. Gary Sattler, a research psychoanalyst, retired Presbyterian minister and seminary professor, will help us think about what trauma is, its effects, and ways of responding, both with others and ourselves.

May 30, 2021 – PART 2 OF 2
Speaker:  Gary Sattler, ThD, PsyD
Topic: “FORGIVENESS”
What does it mean to forgive? Are we to “forgive and forget?”  Does it mean to just be nice?  Gary Sattler will be with us again this week to explore what forgiveness means, how God thinks about it, and what we should expect of ourselves (and perhaps hope for from others).
