FAITH BASED DIALOGUES ON RACE

VIRTUAL BOOK STUDY

We have been told, rightly, that the work ahead is primarily the work of the white and privileged community to wake up, face the deep systemic evils of the racism we have allowed to fester in the fabric of society, and use our influence tomake real and enduring change.  It all starts by opening our eyes and seeing, listening and hearing, studying and understanding, the systems we have created and passively enjoyed while others suffer.  We want to begin this journey by reading and discussing a book together, “Waking Up White” by Debby Irving.  It chronicles the odyssey of a middle aged, middle class, white woman facing up to the racism in her life and her society.

VIRTUAL FAITH-BASED DIALOGUES ON RACE
TUESDAY, AUGUST 4 & AUGUST 18  |  5PM – 6:30PM

As our entire nation wakes up, again, to ongoing issues of systemic racism in our society, how far we have come and how much further we still have to go, BPC wants to do our part in entering into productive, balanced, soul-searching dialogues to try to understand how the disease of racism affects us all, in big and little ways, and what we, as a church and individual Christians, can do to help confront and root out poverty in our lives and institutions.

Please join us for some or all of our zoom-based conversations based on three questions around racism, on three Tuesday nights from 5PM – 6:30PM.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 4: In what subtle, and not so subtle ways, do you see systemic racism still at play in our nation and society?

TUESDAY, AUGUST 18: What role can or should the Christian church and individual Christians play in confronting and rooting out racism, in all its forms, around our nation and world?

Welcome to BPC, the warm heart of the Westside

In these confusing and unsettling days we are finding that the comfort, strength and mercy of God’s Spirit is centering us in a way that helps us to stand up and face this moment with grace and resolve.  Although we are not sure when we will be gathering in person again (probably not until at least the middle of July or August) we have found that our online worship is surprisingly intimate, inspiring and effective at preparing us to keep putting one foot in front of the other and to serve our community and city in some exciting and surprising ways.  We would love to invite you join us for our 10 am virtual worship on Facebook or the BPC website and to sign up here (info@bpcusa.org) for our weekly email with all our mission, fellowship and small group offerings.

Whatever your past spiritual or church experience, we want you to know there is a place for you here. At our church, you will not find a pretentious cadre of holier-than-thou, sanctified saints, but a motley crew of fellow strugglers simply doing their best to allow God to love and heal them so that they can go out and love and serve this precious world God created and adores.

Jesus said, “I have come that they might have life and have it to the full.”

Discovering this full life, even in the midst of this pandemic, lies at the heart of our mission and passion.

We would love nothing more than to welcome you through our virtual doors, immerse you in worship, facilitate the exploration of your faith, and connect you to the community, so that you might discover your God-given calling in life; that place where your great passion intersects with God’s great need.

If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact me!  dave.carpenter@bpcusa.org

Love,

Dave
