CASA of Los Angeles trains, supports and supervises volunteers - CASAs, or Court Appointed Special Advocates - who help abused and neglected foster children in court and in the community. With almost 30,0000 hurt, frightened and confused children in foster care in the jurisdiction of Los Angeles County - one of the largest foster care populations in the country - the work of CASA is vital. A CASA volunteer, appointed by a judge to advocate for a foster child under the court’s protection, gets to know the child, gathers information and provides an independent investigation of the child’s circumstances, advocating for what the CASA believes to be in his or her best interest, on everything from health care and therapy to schooling and visitation. CASA volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of foster children, ensuring that they receive the support and help they deserve. In a child welfare system that is often overly bureaucratic and legalistic, CASA volunteers are a stable presence for foster children and powerful voices for their needs.
