Mission & Service
Guided by God in our commitment to bring hope and relieve human suffering, Mission Ministry exists to inspire, educate and facilitate members to engage in shared, mutual ministry in our community and in our world.
The mission philosophy of Brentwood Presbyterian Church embraces active involvement of the BPC family in relational ministries that stress being with, rather than doing for, people. We call this "mutual ministry."
Opportunities for our congregation "to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God" (Micah 6:8), are based on four basic premises:
- Before engaging in any mission activity, we attempt to observe and understand differences between the systems we conform to and those in effect in the lives of our mission partners.
- Mutual ministry requires that power be distributed evenly and that resources are shared. It is a goal ever before us.
- Mission follows a model of hospitality and we're often the guests. One of the hardest things about accepting our role as guests is allowing ourselves to be dependent upon our hosts and their ways of doing things.
- Our partners in mission have many things to teach us. Engaging in mutual ministry allows us to learn about life and faith from people whose daily life experiences may be dramatically different from our own.
